Live painting and electronics

INK is the new performance project by composer/musician Anna Murray

INK paints sound with movement, improvising with lines, gestures and textures in both the sonic and visual realm.

INK combines improvised electronics and live painting - using a combination of sensors and conductive ink, Murray controls a rich and evolving soundworld through gestures and movement, especially the gestures of painting. INK paints sound with movement, improvising with lines, gestures and textures, fully live and improvised.

Sonically, Murray plays with the sound of the brush and the paper, layered with recordings of machinery, natural sounds, cityscapes and more made in locations across the world, from mountain streams in the Pyrenees, to the machinery in an observatory in Chicago, to the sonic texture of Tokyo itself. INK explores our interactions with and movement through the world around us by constructing unreal soundscapes and allowing a performer to control and explore them with their own movement and artistic expression.

In INK, Murray brings together a wide array of influences on her composition work, from improvised ambient music, gesture-focussed composition, and her experience studying Noh in Tokyo.

INK was launched with a premiere performance in April 2025 at the Signal Flow Festival in Derry-Londonderry.
